Best ways to burn your candles
When your order arrives it will include a burning guide. This will offer hints and tips for achieving the maximum possible burning time for your candles plus advice on the ideal conditions needed for them to perform at their best.
In the meantime the information on this page may help you decide which candle is best suited to your lifestyle by considering how long you like to burn candles in one session.
PILLAR & CHURCH CANDLES
- These should be firmly secured on a suitable candle plate holder that has a wider base than the candle itself, then placed on a heat resistant surface.
- Light each one at the base of the wick tip until a visible flame has formed.
- Wide pillar and church candles need to burn for a few hours at a time until a wide wax pool has formed. This will avoid a hole forming down through the centre or 'tunnelling'. Narrower ones require less time.
- Avoid draughts across the candle.
- Important - For an even burn, once the molten wax has formed a wide pool extinguish the candle by gently dipping the wick into the wax pool with a metal tool and then straightening it again. Then gently push the remaining walls or 'mantel' of the candle towards the centre (to reform a flat top). Allow to cool completely before relighting.
- If the walls are too high then the candle will flicker and struggle to burn.
- Avoid placing inside an enclosed container or lantern without good air flow through the base or sides. Otherwise your candle may flicker and struggle to burn properly. If necessary use a larger lantern with improved air flow for a balanced burn.
ROLLED CANDLES
- These should be firmly secured on a suitable candle plate that has a wider base than the candle itself, then placed on a heat resistant surface.
- Wide rolled candles need to burn for a few hours at a time until a wide wax pool has formed. Narrower ones require less time.
- Light each one at the base of the wick tip until a visible flame has formed.
- To extinguish, gently dip the wick into the wax pool with a metal tool and then straighten it again
- Wide rolled candles should be treated as pillar candles. Please refer to the specific instructions that are supplied with each one.
TAPER CANDLES
- Taper candles should be firmly secured in a suitable taper holder before lighting and then placed on a heat resistant surface.
- Light each one at the base of the wick tip until a visible flame has formed.
- If you like to burn candles in a short session then taper candles are a good choice.
- To extinguish, gently dip the wick into the wax pool with a metal tool and then straighten it again. This will prime the wick ready for the next burn and eliminate any wisping. Don't allow the wick to smoke or smoulder after extinguishing it as this may affect it's ability to be lit again.
VOTIVE CANDLES
- These should always be burned with the glass holder we supply or one of the exact same dimensions.
- Place the holder on a heat resistant surface.
- Don't pick up the votive holder while the candle is burning or while the holder is still hot.
- Votive candles should be burned for at least three hours initially then a couple of hours in each session.
- Extinguish each time by gently dipping the wick into the wax pool and then straightening it again in preparation for the next time you light it.
- Extinguish when a few millimetres of wax is left in the base of the votive holder.
- To remove any stubborn wax from your holders place them in the freezer. Once the wax is fully cold it can be removed easily.
TEA LIGHTS
- These are designed to be kept within the tea light cup supplied and then placed in an appropriate tea light holder on a heat resistant surface.
- Stone or heavy metal holders may affect the performance of the tea light and lead to an uneven burn.
- Tea lights ideally need to be burned in one session to obtain the maximum amount of hours possible.
GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
- Light each candle at the base of the wick tip until a visible flame has formed.
- To extinguish your candles dip the wick into the wax pool with a metal tool, then straighten it again. This will prime the wick ready for the next burning session and eliminate any wisping.
- Always burn candles away from draughts, children and pets.
- Always secure each candle on or in a suitable holder and then place the holder on a heat resistant surface.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended or pick it up while it's hot.
- The best way to remove wax from candle holders is to place them in the freezer. Once the wax is cool enough it can be chipped off easily.
- Keep beeswax candles stored in the dark to avoid them fading in bright sunlight and to preserve their natural scent.
- Remove all labels before lighting.
- All burning times listed are approximate.
BEESWAX BLOOM
- 100% pure beeswax candles will develop a bloom on the exterior of each candle after a few days. It's a sign of the purity of the wax and is therefore considered desirable, but it can be removed easily with a soft cloth if you would prefer your candles to shine.
Enjoy your candles!
